Link text per WCAG 2.4.4

Screen-reader users often have all the links on a page read out as a list. From the link text alone it must be clear where it leads.

Common mistakes

“Click here”, “more”, “read more” (several times on one page), a bare URL, or an icon link with no text and no aria-label at all.

How to do it right

Put the target in the visible link text: “To the price overview”. On icon links, set an aria-label. Identical link texts should lead to the same target.

How a11yglass helps

The free scan checks the delivered HTML and CSS for automatically recognisable WCAG breaches, and names per finding the success criterion and a concrete step. It finds roughly 20–35% of issues and does not replace a full assessment.
