Alt text per WCAG 1.1.1
Every image needs an alt attribute. Screen readers read it out; if it is missing, the file name is often read out instead.
Meaningful images
Briefly describe what the image conveys — not “image of …”. For charts, the key message, not every number.
Decorative images
alt="" (empty but present), so screen readers skip the image. A missing alt is not the same as an empty one.
Images in links and buttons
If a link or button contains only an image, the alt describes the target or the action.
