The EAA for websites

The European Accessibility Act (EU Directive 2019/882), implemented in Germany as the BFSG. From 28 June 2025 many businesses must make their websites, apps and customer portals accessible.

Who is affected?

Among others online shops, banking services, passenger transport and many services in e-commerce. Micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees and at most €2 million annual turnover are exempt — but only for services, not for products.

Which standard applies?

The standard EN 301 549, which refers to WCAG 2.1/2.2 level AA: perceivable, operable, understandable, robust.

What is at risk?

Market surveillance authorities can impose fines; in addition, competition-law warning letters must be dealt with. The quickest first step is a technical check of the current state.
